Explorers & Scout Network at Peak Assault 2008
Peak Assault LogoThis year's event was held in the Brecon Beacons (Wales) and was as good as ever.

As usual there was the air of excitement as we waited for the coach to take us to the mystery location from Phasel's Wood. All the Hemel Explorers, leaders and Network piled onto the coach and off we went to the M25, then the M4, by this time the more intelligent of us had figured out where we were going, some still said the Peak district.

A few hours later, including a brief stop, we reached the camp site for the night. A hurried pitching of tents and then everyone fell to sleep.

The next day saw an early rise for everyone with the teams hitting the hills by 8am. The day was spent going from check point to check point over some marshland, through some forests and generally over challenging terrain, the weather stayed fair for the day with only a couple of bursts of low cloud spoiling the sunshine. After a gruelling eight hours of walking the adult teams returned to base camp whilst the explorers went to their overnight campsite.

The adult teams then enjoyed a hearty dinner and some light refreshments later.

Sunday saw the teams back on the hills, this time in different locations with the adults walking a tougher route for the four hours. Eventually tho everyone made it back to base camp to take down the tents, rest up, get prizes and go home. Speaking of which prize wise Hemel and Stevenage Network team came first in the Network section and Hemel Explorers A came joint first in the explorer section.

Hertfordshire Scouts Development Days - 22nd or 23rd November 2008 - POSTPONED
herts.pngMESSAGE FROM DAVE PULLEN:
Unfortunately the take up for the Development weekend at Oaklands College over 22nd & 23rd November has not been sufficient to make it viable to run the weekend.  At this stage it is only postponed and will bring it up for business at the December District Commissioners meeting.  In the meantime I would like your feedback so that we may review this event. As a consideration, I was thinking of running this in clusters around the county as opposed to a weekend - your thoughts would be appreciated.

I would like to thank all participants and facilitators who volunteered to attend and help run the weekend.

---------- ORIGINAL MESSAGE ----------

Take the opportunity to share best practice, learn from others and drive forward the development agenda in your District or Group.

At the end of the day, those taking part will have a clear understanding of:
- Identifying their specific development and recruitment needs
- The resources available to them to address these needs
- Examples of best practice from around the County
- A District development plan tailored to meeting these needs over the next 12 months
- Support available to them to help deliver this plan
Every participant will take away a development resource pack, with all the supporting information necessary to build upon what they have learned during the day.

These development days will be led by Dave Pullen, Deputy County Commissioner, Development and David Walsh, Regional Development Manager.

1st Apsley & 1st Kings Langley DENS SLeepout
1st Apsley & 1st Kings Langley DESN SleepoutFriday 24th October around 7:30pm saw 42 scouts and 8 leaders from 1st Apsley and 1st Kings Langley scouts arrive at 1st Kings Langley scout headquarters carrying large amounts of cardboard. This was the start of a sponsored sleepout to raise funds for DENS (Dacorum emergency night shelter) and the two scout groups.

The evening started with a presentation from P.C. Nik Pringle about the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse with lots of samples for the scouts to see.

Everybody then set about the task of building cardboard city in the grounds of the headquarters so they could sleep in a similar way to homeless people.
We had songs around the fire before visiting the soup kitchen for hot soup and biscuits (biscuits donated by McVities at Park Royal) before settling into the boxes for sleep.

In spite of the cold weather and frost on the outside of some sleeping bags everybody slept fairly well until about 6am.
Then began the massive clear up and sausages in rolls for breakfast before sending home lots of tired but smiling scouts on Saturday morning.

Museum Resources for Section Leaders - Message from Dacorum Heritage Trust
We are the Accredited Museum for the Borough of Dacorum based in Berkhamstead.  The Museum Store is the home of over 65,000 objects relating to the history of Dacorum.

There are a large number of resources open to schools, local societies and clubs like yourselves.

Object loan boxes include authentic pieces from the time and a resource pack with suggested activities.  Subjects range from the Victorians, WW2, Hemel Hempstead New Town and recreating an archaeological dig with real roman pottery.

Also available to loan are information boards relating to subjects of local history.

Visits for object handling sessions can be arranged. Workshops will be lead by a member of the curatorial team who will work with group leaders to identify the needs of the group. Changes to Policy, Organisation & Rules (October 2008)
Please find attached a letter from Matthew Heyday, Assistant Secretary of the Scout Association, detailing recent changes to Policy, Organisation & Rules. There are two rule changes in particular it is important for us all to be aware of:

Rule 3.8h
The Association has now had confirmation from the Department for Children, Schools and Families that Section 71 of the Children's Act does not apply to Scouting. This is excellent news as it now means that there can be flexibility in the lower age range for Cubs (7.5 years). The core age remains 8-10 years.

Rule 4.28(b) and 5.19(b)

This amendment means that a further criminal records check is not necessary if an individual is moving from one appointment to another within the same County or its Districts, providing that:
a) The disclosure certificate is not more tha 5 years old
b) The individual is not returning to Scouting after a break in service of more than 30 days.
c) Headquarters does not have recorded any adverse information concerning the individual.
However, a further Disclosure will be required in an individual wishes to take a role or appointment in another County or District or if a District/County requires a new Dsclosure for operational reasons.

Nights Away Permits - Validation & Conversion
atlogo.jpg We are running an other opportunity to validate Nights Away Permits on 26th November.

This was a very successful session the last time with some 20 leaders converting their training form the old scheme to the updated one and validating their permit.

You will have the opportunity to discuss the changes in requirments to the permit and validate against the current requirments - this is not a Nights Away training session.

The session will start at around 7:30 at District HQ in Boxmoor.

If you hold a current permit, there is no need to attend this session however as your permit comes up for renewal you will need to either book on the County Course (Highly recommended) for the full training or come along as we will go through the changes and you can re validate against the new criteria if appropriate.

Look forward to seeing those who wish to attend on the 26th.
