Spring Bank Holiday Sailing Week
If you would like to improve your sailing skills consider attending the Sailing Activity Week at East Mersea run by a team of qualified County Instructors. The week will suit older Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Network Scouts.

The sailing activities during the week will be based on the Sailing syllabuses of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and the appropriate RYA sailing qualification will be presented at the end of the week if the course requirements are completed successfully.

Lochearnhead 2010 - Price reduced, places still available
What is Lochearnhead 2010?
Hertfordshire Scouts own a converted station at Lochearnhead in Scotland. In the heart of the highlands it is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and discover new adventures. Hemel Hempstead Scouts have a week long expedition in August 2010 and would love you to attend. So if you are a Scout aged 12 and over at the time of the trip, an Explorer Scout or Network member fill in the application form today.

As the event is now drawing near we need to finalise numbers and start making preparations. I urge you to consider attendance as this will be the main Explorer activity of the year. I know a number of you are holding off waiting to see who else is attending why not become the trend setter and put your name down for the others to follow your lead.

The cost of the Trip has been reduced to £245.

What will we do when we get there?
As we are only going for 1 week, it will be difficult to fit everything in that we traditionally do. Therefore we would like you to tell us which of the activities below you would like to take part in as a three day specialist activity. On the other days, we will timetable other adventurous activities, so that you get to try most other things going on. Please complete the attach
ed form to indicate your preferences

During the trip everyone will be required to help with duties including prepare meals, cleaning the Station, cleaning the toilets and washing facilities. These will be divided out between the participants.

Announcement of WSJ 2011 participants
World Scout Jamboree participants selected.Hemel Hempstead District Scouts are pleased to announce that the following young people have been selected  to attend the Jamboree in Sweden in 2011 as part of the Hertfordshire contingent:
Charlie Gower, Snooks ESU
Jacob Pass, 1st Leverstock Green
James Price, 1st Apsley

Over 30 of our Scouts and Explorers took part in a selection weekend at the end of November. All participants were of an excellent standard and a credit to their various Groups.

We were hoping that the District would be allocated more spaces as we had lots more really excellent candidates, but it now seems unlikely.

Congratulations to the successful three!

Colin Rivett, Assistant District Commissioner

Have your say on the future of Scouting...
2-scouts.gifHQ are now ready for the next stage in the work on agreeing Scouting’s Vision Towards 2018 and would again like your input.

Comments and suggestions from the summer consultations were considered at the National Conference in October, and the outputs from 26 workshops and other sessions are summarised in the report Vision for Scouting in 2018.

You can contribute individually or perhaps by discussing at your Leader meetings. We are also particularly keen to hear the views of young people and would encourage all Leaders to discuss with their Sections and Units wherever possible.

Some specific aspects you might wish to consider include:
  1. Consider the statements in paragraph 11 of the report, do you agree with them, or would you suggest changes?
  2. Do you agree with the priorities identified in paragraph 12 of the report, would you suggest changes?
  3. If we were to identify a ‘big ambition’ for Scouting, what should it be?
Please send your comments to vision2018@scout.org.uk, indicating whether they are personal or representative of a particular group of people, no later than the end of February 2010. To assist analysis, please keep them succinct wherever possible.

May we also take the opportunity to thank you for all that you have done for Scouting throughout this year and to wish you, your family and friends all the very best for the coming year.
