Hi

Following my email a couple of weeks ago about how we support Young Leaders in Hemel Hempstead, I’m delighted to say I’ve had a few offers of help and have co-ordinated a meeting tonight of those who will be involved going forward… Here’s the new team:

  • Administrator – Nickie Davies: Nickie is already involved on the group executive committee at 1st Hemel Hempstead and has children involved in th Scout/Explorer sections. Nickie will register new member, update the records and ensure that at 17.5 yrs, everyone is aware of the opportunities available to them – both as adult volunteers and members of the Scout Network.
  • “Catch-up” Co-ordinator – Kirstie Dalrymple: Kirstie is a parent of Young Leaders and has agreed to help by calling section leaders and parents to give the existing records a complete update to ensure we know who is helping out, which section they’r in and which modules/missions they’ve completed… she’ll be in touch over the coming weeks.
  • Training Co-ordinator – Michael Albon: Michael is a Cub Scout Leader at 4th Hemel Hempstead and completed the Young Leader training himself. He will be responsible for booking the venues, organising the trainers, grouping the YLs s they end up in the right training and fronting up each training evening.

Recruitment of “Supporters”

The team are now looking for individuals to support two or three Young Leaders through their modules/missions to encourage them to achieve their Young Leader “Belt” award. This could be an existing leader in a section or a great role for a parent looking for a more flexible way to help support Scouting.

If you’re interested, please email youngleaders@hemel-scouts.co.uk

Contacting the team

Whilst we get everyone up and running, please send all enquiries to youngleaders@hemel-scouts.co.uk and it will be directed to the relevant team member.

Thank you Sandra!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sandra Harding for the excellent job she has done for a number of years, which allows the current team to take over a successful and well-organised operation.

Regards

Russ

Hemel Hempstead Scouts Sailing Day Saturday 14th July 2018

A day dinghy sailing at the ESSA Water Activities Centre, Nazeing, Essex (https://essa.org.uk/).

The day will be focussed on improving sailing skills and an introduction to racing. It will be open to any Cub, Scout or Explorer who has completed their Stage 1 or 2 Sailing activity badge or Stage 1 or 2 RYA youth sailing award.

Minibus transport will be provided and that is included in the total cost. We will leave Hemel Hempstead at 9am and aim to return for 5pm.

Drinks and snacks will be provided as there is no shop on the site. Participants will need to bring their own packed lunch.

We will be using ESSA’s boats and all safety equipment. Please note that their rules state that young people at the centre are required to wear helmets when dinghy sailing. Participants will need their own personal clothing and waterproofs.

ESSA charge £21 per young person per day. The total cost will therefore be £27.50.

Bookings will be via the Hemel Hempstead Scout website in the usual way for our sailing activities . Once a booking and payment has been made full details and permission forms will be sent out which must be returned before the booking is confirmed.

You have probably seen details about the new legislation for protection of personal data (GDPR)  & wondered how it will affect record keeping in Scouting. We are still waiting for final guidance from the Scout Association but feel that everyone needs to be aware of what you can & cannot do under the new rules.

We have a training module already arranged for Administration & this will include GDPR & you are very welcome to join us for it.

The module will be run on Saturday 2nd June at Phasels between 09.30 & 11.15. This is the weekend at the end of the Bank Holiday

If you would like a place then please email Steve Harris (ltm.gtwhite@btinternet.com), places are limited so book early!!

Steve Harris – Training Manager

The last five years have seen consistent growth in membership across the district and an ever-increasing range of activities being offered to young people.

By virtue of the fact that you are a leader or parent you are eligible to stand as (or nominate someone to stand) a member of the District Scout Executive Committee. For the coming year, we are particularly keen to hear from people with skills, experience or an interest in the following area(s):

  • District Sections (6-25) – ensuring that funds are best-used to support the 6-25 programme
  • Finance & Fundraising – to include scrutiny of applications to the “Adventure” & “International” funds
  • Minibus – to support the minibus committee and report on the maintenance and finances
  • Property & Equipment – to ensure equipment and buildings are well-managed, financed and insured
  • Public Relations/Development – to lead on our external promotional activities and recruitment
  • Scout Shop – to support the Scout Shop manager and report on the finances and operations

We are looking to elect four Executive Committee Members to serve for a year until May 2019 in addition to four people nominated by our District Commissioner – ideally responsibility for each area above will be shared by two or three people on the committee.

All members of the District Executive become Charity Trustees and meet to support the District Commissioner and Scout Groups, promote the development of safe scouting, raise funds and administer the District’s finances, appoint sub-committees where required and attend to the District’s own administration.

The Executive meets approximately 6 times a year.  It is not a uniformed role and you need no previous experience.  In line with the National Association’s aims we do seek for some nominees to represent the young people in our movement and therefore particularly welcome nominations of adults aged between 18 and 25.

This letter is to invite you to stand for election yourself or to nominate another member of the Council (with their agreement) that you believe will add value to the District and carry out the role above effectively.  The election happens at the Annual General Meeting which will be on Thursday 24th May.

To make a nomination please complete the form at www.hemel-scouts.co.uk/exec before midnight on Sunday 20th May.

If you would like to have an informal chat about the role please call me on 07554 997144 or to read more information about the role of the District Executive Committee please see the fact sheet that can be found at: http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/facts/pdfs/fs330078.pdf

Thank you for considering joining us,

Keith Gower
