The last four years have seen consistent growth in memership across the district and an ever-increasing range of activities being offered to young people.

Now is your opportunity to help us continue to develop Scouting in Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley and Bovingdon.

By virtue of the fact that you are a leader or parent you are eligible to stand (or nominate someone to stand) as a member of the District Scout Executive Committee. For the coming year, we are particularly keen to hear from people with skills, experience or an interest in the following area(s):

  • The 6-25 Programme – ensuring that funds are best-used to support the 6-25 programme
  • Finance & Fundraising – to include scrutiny of applications to the “Adventure” & “International” funds and loan administered from the General Reserves.
  • Minibus – to support the minibus committee and report on the maintenance and finances
  • Property & Equipment – to ensure our equipment and buildings are well-managed, financed and insured
  • Public Relations/Development – to lead on our external promotional activities and recruitment
  • Scout Shop – to support the Scout Shop manager and report on the finances and operations

We are looking to elect four Executive Committee Members to serve for a year until May 2018 in addition to four people nominated by our District Commissioner – ideally responsibility for each area above will be shared by two or three people on the committee.

All members of the District Executive become Charity Trustees and meet to support the District Commissioner and Scout Groups, promote the development of safe scouting, raise funds and administer the District’s finances, appoint sub-committees where required and attend to the District’s own administration.

The Executive meets approximately 6 times a year.  It is not a uniformed role and you need no previous experience.  In line with the national Association’s aims we do seek for some nominees to represent the young people in our movement and therefore particularly welcome nominations of adults aged between 18 and 25.

This letter is to invite you to stand for election yourself or to nominate another member of the Council (with their agreement) that you believe will add value to the District and carry out the role above effectively.  The election happens at the Annual General Meeting which will be on Thursday 18th May.  Please see the invitation attached.

To make a nomination please complete the form at before midnight on Sunday 14th May.

If you would like to have an informal chat about the role please call me on 07554 997144 or to read more information about the role of the District Executive Committee please see the fact sheet that can be found at:

Thank you for considering joining us,

Keith Gower

Chairman of the Hemel Hempstead District Scout Executive Committee.

In an effort to make life as straightforward as possible for leaders, I have added a form to our website so you can submit your Nights Away Notification forms more easily online. The URL for the online form is:

Submitting your form online will ensure you’re always submitting the information required on the latest version of the NAN form and will send the details to all the relevant people for you.

The link is in the main menu on the district website but it may be worth book-marking this page for future.

If you still want to email an attachment, that’s absolutely fine… the latest version is attached.

Kandersteg Kit List 2017

Could you be part of the Scout Shop team?

Two members of the existing team have decided to step down due to other commitments and we are splitting the manager role into two parts (rota/staff support and administration/finance) so we are looking for new members to join the team.

For the last 10 years, Hemel Hempstead District Scouts have operated a Scout Shop, supplying young people with uniform and leaders with badges, resources, certificates and much more. The Scout Shop also raises around £2,500 per year to reduce the cost of Scouting – keeping activity costs for young people down and ensuring leaders have everything they need to run successful groups!

What’s the commitment?

  • Team members are rotated on a four-weekly basis, so we’re asking you to help one evening per month, usually 11 times over the course of a year.
  • The Assistant Manager will be responsible for drawing up the staff rota, recruiting and supporting team members and popping into the shop some Tuesday evenings to find out from team members and customers if there’s any way we can improve how the shop works.

These roles are great ways to support Scouting for parents unable to help with weekly sessions.

Do I need any specific experience?

  • Team members – absolutely not… it’s just a case of offering customers the items they’re looking for, checking the order form and taking payment.
  • Assistant Manager – previous retail experience would be helpful but not essential at all.

I’m interested… what next?

Please respond to this email and you will be contacted to chat through what’s involved in more detail before you decide whether it’s for you or not.

Where is this year going?! – I can’t believe we’re heading towards the end of February already!  Apologies for the absence of newletters during the first half term – but now for a catch up!

2017 has already seen quite a variety of exciting activities –

Don’t forget to keep sending news and photos for us to share with everyone!

Forthcoming Events

  • 24th February – Archery permit course
  • 25th February – Pinewood Derby
  • 9th March – Young Leader training
  • 17th March – Kandersteg Training Camp
  • 20th April – All Sections Leader Meeting

Keep an eye on the District website for Diary updates!

Please find a leaflet attached for our District Scout Shop.

Every Tuesday evening during term-time the shop is open from 7.00pm – 8.30pm with uniforms and badges (leaders only) available to buy. Due to increased demand, we have recently increased the level of stock we hold of the most popular items.

A hard copy of the leaflet for every child will be sent to section leaders for distribution next week.

Proceeds from the Scout Shop are used to reduce the cost of Scouting locally – so please buy from us rather than online or from for-profit businesses… you still pay the same price.

Just a quick reminder about the all-sections leader meeting on Tuesday 3rd January.

Start: 7.45pm for 8pm

Finish: 9.30pm

Looking forward to seeing you on 3rd January – hope you enjoy seeing in the New Year.

Hope you had a good Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year.

We have been busy booking flights, working with the staff at Kandersteg and making plans for the build-up to our trip next Summer!

Please read the following carefully and respond where necessary.

Programme Preferences

The summer programme has just been released by Kandersteg. On March 1st we have to put in a bid for the activities that we would like to do. In order to be ready for this, we have begun discussions with the programme team at Kandersteg and prepared a questionnaire for participants to state their activity preferences. Please click the link below to complete the questionnaire. Whilst completing the questionnaire, please cross reference with our attached activity guide for an explanation of each activity.

The form also asks for who young people would like to share a tent with – please refer to the attached “K17 – Flights” document for a list of everyone who is going. If you don’t currently know anyone else who is going, don’t worry, we can look at your tent grouping at the training day on 28th January.

Responses must be received by 28th January. After this we will be creating a programme, in discussion with Kandersteg, based on the responses we have received.

Dates for 2017

28th January – Training Day & Fundraising Quiz Night

Further details will be sent out very early in the New Year – we will be spending the day together getting to know each other and holding a quiz night for friends and families in the evening.

In the morning, we will hold an initial briefing for parents.

17th – 18th March – Training Camp

An overnight camp (Friday evening – Saturday afternoon) to practice working together.

Final briefing – date TBC

We will hold a final briefing for parents in July, the date for this will be confirmed in the Spring.

Flights to/from Switzerland

We are pleased to say that we have managed to secure flights just within our budget – in order to achieve this, we have had to split between 3 different flights from two different UK airports.

All flights will arrive at and depart from Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) in Switzerland.

Please see the sheet attached to see which flight you’re on and which airport you’re flying from.

If you have any questions about the trip/build-up, please email me or call on 07790 296378.
