Save the dates – Autumn 2019 & Spring 2020 events

I thought it would be a good idea to drop you a quick email with future dates to note for those of you who like to plan ahead.

Electronic copies of the letters to young people and information for leaders will be available from the weblink below each event by mid-August. Full details will be emailed for each event in late August and will be explained at the leader’s meeting on 3rd September… but for now, please put the dates in your diary.

 

3rd September: all section’s leader meeting (adult leaders)

7.45pm for 8pm start – 9.30pm @ Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

A chance to network with other leaders, find out about and have your say on future events and pick up tips and ideas to help run your section.

 

9th September: Explorer Scout leader meeting & programme planning session

7.45pm – Warners End HQ

Termly meeting for all Explorer leaders where the new term’s programme is finalised and dates for weekend/Summer trips are agreed for the next 12-18 months.

 

16th September: Young Leader training (young leaders)

Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

Training modules for young people aged 14-18 who help with the Beaver, Cub & Scout sections.

30th September: GSL, Group Chair & District Team meeting

Termly meeting for those involved in the organisation and support of Scout Groups to come together to share ideas, good practice and give input into what the District is doing to support Scout Groups in the district.

5th & 6th October: Training Train (adult leaders)

Phasels Wood Activity Centre

Training modules and practical sessions for new adults to help complete the adult training.

15th October – Awards Evening (all sections)

The Forum (civic centre), Marlowes

A chance to celebrate young people and adults who have received their Chief Scout, Young Leader, Duke of Edinburgh or Queen’s Scout Awards in the 2018/19 academic year.

18th – 20th October – Peak Assault (Explorer Scouts & Scout Network)

Peak Assault is Hertfordshire Scouts’ most challenging competition organised for members of the Scout Association aged 14+.

28th October – 1st November: HALF TERM HOLIDAYS

 

27th – 29th October: Bronze DofE Expedition (Explorer Scouts)

A weekend for those aiming for their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

 

1st November: Outing to the Science Museum (Beavers & Cubs)

Pick-up & drop-off in Hemel Hempstead

Half term day-trip to the Science Museum – cost includes coach travel.

 

5th November – Family Firework Spectacular (all sections)

Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

An opportunity to have a great night watching some spectacular fireworks and raise money for your group at the same time. The school kindly donate back a percentage of any ticket sales to the group who sell them.

Letters will be available from Hobbs Hill Wood School in September/October.

15th – 17th November – Green Beret Challenge (Scouts)

Lees Wood Campsite

A teamwork challenge for Scouts across Hertfordshire – teams of 5-6 Scouts undertake a series of day and night bases, an orienteering course and an assault course.

Teams must be supported by at least one adult – a centrally catered option is available.

24th November – Astronomer Badge Day (Cubs)

An exciting afternoon of science-themed activities and interactive sessions. Cub Scouts who attend will receive their Scientist activity badge.

Cubs will go round in groups of ten, accompanied by an adult. We would ask groups to provide a leader and an extra adult/young leader for every 10 young people participating from their pack. Also an extra leader will be needed to help run the bases.

27th November – Scout to Explorer linking event

Termly linking event for Scouts due to join Explorers at the beginning of the next school term – includes a meeting for parents to understand how Explorer Scouting works and for the Explorer team to answer any questions.

27th January 2020 – Creative Activity Badge Day (Beaver Scouts)

Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

A chance for Beaver Scouts to earn their Creative activity badge by joining in with two hours of activities, organised in a carosel of bases. Leaders will be asked to help run bases, with parents supervising group of 3-6 children.

 

18th January 2020: Inter-troop Hockey competiton (Scouts)

Hobbs Hill Wood school

Organised by members of the Scout Network, troops will compete against each other in a one day, league & knock-out style indoor hockey competition.

 

1st February – Swimming Gala (Cubs & Scouts)

Sports Centre, Boxmoor

Our annual swimming gala, consisting of age-appropriate individual and team races for each section plus a joint relay which contributes to the overall group trophy results. Teams should be accompanied by a ratio of 1 adult to 8 young people.

22nd February – Pinewood Derby

1st Apsley Scout HQ

From January 2020, kits (wood, wheels, axles) will be available from which you make a car or vehicle of some sort and then they are raced on a special track to see which car goes the fastest. Cars are raced in groups, the fastest cars from each group race in a final.

There are prizes for the best looking cars, split into age groups, and for the overall fastest and runner ups.

29th February – 2nd March 2020 – Chiltern Challenge (Explorer Scouts)

Chiltern Challenge is Hertfordshire Scouts very own Explorer Scout Competition. Over the weekend, teams of five pit their wits against a series of challenges designed to show their skill, ingenuity and team working.

March/April – District Archery competition (Scouts)

Venue TBC

Each troop will be allocated an evening (or evenings, depending on size) on their usual troop night, to go to a local archery range for an evening of archery. Each Scout will get a series of practice shots before taking their competitive shots. There will be individual prizes (by age bracket) and an overall Troop prize based on the average of all their Scout’s scores.

 

14th March – Ready Steady Cook (Scouts)

Venue TBC

A team challenge for team of 3-4 Scouts to prepare, cook and serve a meal with surprise ingredients.

 

6th April – 17th April: HALF TERM HOLIDAYS

 

21st April – all section’s leader meeting (all adults)

8th – 22nd August: Lochearnhead expedition (Scouts & Explorers)

Lochearnhead Scout Station, Scotland

A two-week full, full of walking, climbing, sailing, paddle sports and other activities, a day trip to Edinburgh and plenty of other adventures. Full details will be out next week
