Coronavirus update & next steps

Hi

Following the email you will have received from Tim Kidd about the suspension of all Scouting activities due to the evolving situation with Covid-19, I wanted to offer some simple “next steps”…

1. Communication to parents

I suggest you publish a simple statement across email and social media:

“Late this afternoon, the Prime Minister has said that everyone in the UK should now avoid non-essential travel and contact with others.

Given this guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events must be suspended from tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2020. This suspension applies to young people and adults, and will be until further notice.

I think we all agree that it’s in challenging times like these, that our Scout values matter most. We are talking to the Government and other community organisations to see how Scouts can support our country during this crisis. We must make sure that we do this in the safest possible way, and don’t put anyone at further risk. We will update you more on this over the coming weeks.

The Scout Association are planning to share activities for young people to do at home with their parents if families are faced with self-isolation. We will be communicating more about this soon too.

I am sure you will have questions over the coming days and weeks – as further information becomes available, we will share further updates.”

2. Conference call for GSL, Groups Chairs & Trustees

I will be holding a conference call for GSLs, groups chairs & trustees at 8pm this Wednesday evening to discuss the short- and medium-term implications of this announcement and the practical steps groups should take over the coming weeks to ensure the ongoing viability of groups and a successful re-introduction of activities when we are allowed to do so.

To participate, dial the phone number below and follow the instructions – there is no charge to call from mobiles:
