1st Apsley

Scouting is growing in Hemel Hempstead – another example of this is 1st Apsley opening a third Scout Troop this year. Thursday evening saw the investiture of 12 new Scouts, with each Scout making their Scout Promise in front of parents and leaders.

The new Troop is looking forward to the Scouting events in the programme for the year ahead: Matthew, an 11yr old new Scout said “I am looking forward to summer camp, which we will be taking part as a new Scout Troop”.

Also on this special night two adult awards were presented to Chris and Dee Willmore – a husband and wife team who have been involved in Apsley Scout Group for nearly 20 years.

As part of their winter programme, 20 Beavers Scouts (6-8 year olds) from 1st Apsley Scout Group enjoyed took part in a 24hr sleepover – themed on the Smurfs.

The adventure for them was to visit Smurfland – on arrival they all had to burst their “Smurf Berry”, take on a new Smurf name, turned themselves blue and collected their smurf hat.

Activities included craft making, cooking outdoor challenges and games aswell as the great smurf campfire sing-along.

Christmas came early for the Beaver Scouts and Cub Scoutss from 1st Apsley Scout Group this year.

On Friday 2nd December they enjoyed their own Christmas party – around 150 youngsters were entertained by the leaders with games and Christmas themed activities.

After enjoying their McDonalds Happy Meal, they were joined by a special visitor who wished them a very Merry Christmas!

1st Apsley Scout Groups held their end of year review on Friday 25th November.

An audience of many parents and invited guests (including Mike Penning MP) were entertained by each Beaver Scout colony, Cub Scout pack and Scout Troop as they told the story of fantastic adventures they have taken part in during the year.

Towards the end of the evening there were badge presentations to young people who had achieved the Chief Scout Award available in their respective age group. A special presentantion to Joe, a Beaver Scout who won the Hertfordshire Scouts Cyclocross event.

At the end of the evening, a collection took place which raised over £300 towards the knife crime awarness charity in memory of Billy Dove who was a Cub Scout and Scout at 1st Apsley.

Last weekend, teams from 4 Scout Groups in Hemel Hempstead took part in the Hertfordshire Scouts “Green Beret” challenge. To add to this year’s challenge, Scout has to put up with some very cold and damp weather!

The Scouts camped at Tolmers Activity Centre and in teams of 6 they tackled an orienteering course, a 90 minute long assault course as well as completing day and night challenge bases which lasted approx 15 mins each.

The event started early Saturday morning and finished around 11pm – so it was a tough competition to complete as always!

Around 120 teams from Scout Groups across Hertfordshire took part – so for Hemel Hempstead to have 3 teams in the top ten was a fantastic achievement:

2nd – 1st Leverstock Green (A)

6th – 1st Leverstock Green (D)

7th – 1st Apsley Otters (M)

Thanks also to those who helped on the bases – Hemel Hempstead Scout Active Support Unit as well as leaders from 1st Apsley, 1st Bennetts End and 1st Leverstock Green.

Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts from 1st Apsley Scout Group took part in a Christmas craft event on Saturday 12th November.

Each child was given a challenge sheet to complete all 8 base(s including making things and drawing etc) – a completed sheet was exchanged for  their creative challenge badge.

Adam a 6 year old Beaver Scout said ” the best bit was the making of the Christmas tree box as it had sweets in it”.

Hemel Hempstead District Scouts are saddened to hear of the death of former member, Billy Dove.

Billy was one of our young people he came to 1st Apsley Cub Scouts and then went into our Scout Troop. He was always laughing and bursting with energy. Billy took part in many activities and jollied the others along when they were tired, he often helped his fellow Scouts and friends along the way, he was a great person to be around and lit up the room with his cheeky grin and cherub looks.

I will always remember the time he took his hair-dryer to camp and asked where to plug it in!! it always makes me smile.

Billy will be sadly missed by everybody who had the privilege of knowing him.

Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts from 1st Apsley Scout Group celebrated Halloween with a spooky party at the Groups HQ in Durrants Hill on Monday evening.

Young people were in costume for this event and so were all the leaders who greeted them on arrival with activity passports.

Bases included traditional activities like apple-bobbing and eating hanging doughnuts without using your hands as well as finding worms in jelly, decorating cakes and biscuits, a spooky maze and a scary outdoor walk.

The evening was rounded off with games of spooky skittles and feed the witch.

Last Thursday (27th October) me and some of my scout group 1st Apsley went on a coach to London’s Natural History Museum. We split up into groups and I was with my big brother who is a Young Leader, Jack and Arky.

When we got to the museum we went straight to the dinosaur exhibit and saw loads of cool dinosaur bones and a moving T Rex model. We then went into a lift and went up to the Cocoon. This was a big dome with a lot of exhibits.

Everyone of them had a scanner and we had special cards. These downloaded information and saved it for us to view at home on a website!

We went to the picnic area and met the other cubs, beavers and scouts for lunch. We went upstairs and looked at the Evolution Hall. We learnt about our ancestors- monkeys!

In the Mineral room there were lots of amazing colourful stones and rocks. In the vault we saw expensive diamonds, my favourite was a pyramid full of natural diamonds.

Arky got some stickers that let us go to the ‘hands on ‘ area for half an hour. We met another group and we went into Earth Hall, going up some escalators showing us what it’s like in the centre of the Earth. Finally we went to the Earthquake Room and found out about volcanoes.

I really loved it at the Natural History Museum and would definitely go again.

40 Beavers Scouts from 1st Apsley enjoyed a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed sleepover last weekend.

The children were greeted by Willy Wonka and the umpa lompas and had to eat magic sweets to enter the chocolate factory.

Willy Wonka taught the beavers how to make different sweets including Honeycombe and the highlight of that was when too much soda was added and we had a honeycombe river flowing everywhere.  Peppermints and truffles and toffee were also made.

Empty toilet rolls were turned into replicas of Willy Wonka but the highlight of the event had to be the chocloate fountains, candy floss machine, doughnut machine and of course the popcorn machine.

The Beaver Scouts had a wonderful time and are looking forward to next years sleepover.
