District News

Hi

You may already have seen in your Scouting+ emails from Gilwell that the Nights Away Notification form was updated in September but I have had some old versions sent to me, so I have attached the new form again for everyone to keep on file.

Locally, we have also created an online version, which can be submitted via the URL below:

Thanks

Russ

OPEN FOR NEW MEMBERS AND PREVIOUS MEMBERS WHO WISH TO CONTINUE – NOW IN IT’S 12th YEAR.

Scout/Explorer Leaders – please distribute to the members of your sections.

Please note: Everyone interested must register their interest including those on the current course (see below).

From Baden Powell’s initial ideals and Chief Scout Bear Gryll’s TV popularity, invitation to be part of this ever popular group. The course is constantly evolving, adding in new skills, new equipment, it just gets better and better.

  • Participate in the practical side of woodcraft and backwoods skills, camping without a tent.
  • Work in own age groups; scouts, explorers, adults & leaders.

Parents may join in too as long as they are DBS/CRB cleared by their Group.

It is fundamentally:

  • Designed for anyone from ‘Scouts (must be over 11) to Adults’ in the District.
  • Fun for all, no previous bushcraft experience required.
  • You need to have camped under canvas previously (with your own scout group).
  • Not requiring specialised equipment to take part as this is provided.
  • Allows you to try out something you have never done before and be more self sufficient.
  • Some of the many skills you may wish to try out:
  • Make a shelter from ‘tarp’ or natural materials and sleep in it.
  • Using a Knife, Axe and Saw in the Bushcraft way.
  • All you need to know about fires and starting them without a match.
  • Identifying and collecting wild foods.
  • Preparing and cooking animals and fish.
  • Making gadgets from natural materials.
  • How to collect and make safe drinking water.
  • Using and sleeping in a hammock
  • Opportunity for Scouts and Explorer Scouts to gain their Survival badge

Dates for 2019 are in the attached flyer.

If you wish to take part in this popular group for 2018 you will need to register or re-register (if existing member):

  1. Register your interest on-line only by emailing to hemelbushcraft@btinternet.com
  2. Give your name (those taking part), date of birth (if under 18), scout group, address, contact Tel Nos.
  3. Be sure to put the dates on your calendar and register on-line to hemelbushcraft@btinternet.com

Hi

The next Scout/Explorer linking event will be on Wednesday 14th November.  The activity will be ‘Bet’s On’ – details on the attached flyer.  Please could you email desa@hemelexplorers.org.uk (by 31st October) to advise the names and contact details of scouts from your Troop who should be invited.

Also, if you or any of your other scout leaders would like to come along, you’d be more than welcome.

Russ, Maureen & Frank

We have earmarked the next Pinewood Derby for 23rd Feb 2019. I hope that this event continues to appeal to your scouts, last year had the most participants ever!

The kits have to come from the USA and takes 6 weeks to come. In order to have stock in before Xmas (so you can have them at the start of the new year) I would like a rough idea of the number you require BEFORE the end of October as I will be placing one order only for them.

Please have a word with your scouts and then email me with an approx number jlarks@btinternet.com – the kits unfortunately will probably be £6 this year unless anyone knows of a sponsor for the prizes. I won’t know the cost for sure until they arrive as exchange rates and import duty effect this.

This event is popular as it is an ideal event to do in the winter months, gets parents involved (possible recruiting exercise) as they can assist in the main shaping of the car, scouts also can gain their model maker badge as it fits one of the requirements.

Woggles Up!

John

Hi

Can you believe we’re racing towards the October half term break already?!

Congratulations to the Young Leader training team on a successful first session in over a year which took place last night – really pleased to have this up and running again.

If you’re coming to the awards evening tonight, see you there – we’ve got a record number of award recipients booked in so it should be a great night!
