District News

We have earmarked the next Pinewood Derby for 23rd Feb 2019. I hope that this event continues to appeal to your scouts, last year had the most participants ever!

The kits have to come from the USA and takes 6 weeks to come. In order to have stock in before Xmas (so you can have them at the start of the new year) I would like a rough idea of the number you require BEFORE the end of October as I will be placing one order only for them.

Please have a word with your scouts and then email me with an approx number jlarks@btinternet.com – the kits unfortunately will probably be £6 this year unless anyone knows of a sponsor for the prizes. I won’t know the cost for sure until they arrive as exchange rates and import duty effect this.

This event is popular as it is an ideal event to do in the winter months, gets parents involved (possible recruiting exercise) as they can assist in the main shaping of the car, scouts also can gain their model maker badge as it fits one of the requirements.

Woggles Up!

John

If you’re coming to the awards evening tonight, see you there – we’ve got a record number of award recipients booked in so it should be a great night!

Hi

Please find details attached for next year’s trip to the Haarlem Jamborette for distribution to Scouts and Explorers in your unit, as soon as possible.

We have been told by the organisers this weekend that we will be limited to a maximum contingent size of 55 (including adults) so young people places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and are expected to sell out very quickly!

Adults – please respond using the reply form and a leadership of 6 will be formed with an appropriate mix of skills.

If you have any questions, please email haarlem@hemel-scouts.co.uk.

Dear

As a result of the implementation of GDPR at the end of May, it is now a requirement that all Leaders, Assistant Leaders, Section Assistants, Active Support Members,  and Trustees undertake Scout Association GDPR Training as a condition of holding an appointment.

We all handle data in someway – be it youth records, finance records, emails,  and so on and that is why this training is required, in order that we are all aware of our responsibilities.

Before you ask, we do not accept external GDPR Training Certificates – this training is Scouting specific.

All current post holders must complete this training by 31st December 2018, so it is better to do it sooner rather than later.

This is online training and after being trialed, it is now available to all. It will not take you very long at all. Simply send me through your certificate of completion and I will add it to your training profile.

My understanding is that you will only have to do this training once – in other words, it is not renewed like Safety, Safeguarding or First Aid.

The link is here:

https://members.scouts.org.uk/training_module/GDPRwithcertificate/#/

Please do make sure that you do this training quickly as it is vital that everyone fully understands their responsibilities in handling data.

Could you be part of the Scout Shop team?

For the last 13 years, Hemel Hempstead District Scouts have operated a Scout Shop, supplying young people with uniform and leaders with badges, resources, certificates and much more. The Scout Shop also raises around £2,500 per year to reduce the cost of Scouting – keeping activity costs for young people down and ensuring leaders have everything they need to run successful groups!

Two members of the existing team have decided to step down due to other commitments so we are looking for new members to join the team.

What’s the commitment?

Team members are rotated on a four-weekly basis, so we’re asking you to help one evening per month, usually 11 times over the course of a year.

These roles are great ways to support Scouting for parents unable to help with weekly sessions.

Do I need any specific experience?

Absolutely not… it’s just a case of offering customers the items they’re looking for, checking the order form and taking payment.

I’m interested… what next?

Please respond to this with your telephone number and you will be contacted to chat through what’s involved in more detail before you decide whether it’s for you or not.

Thanks

Russ

Hi

As part of Thursday’s well-attended leader’s meeting, a number of suggestions were made in a discussion about how we best support leader’s. One which was widely supported was the creation of a Facebook group for leaders to be able to communicate and share ideas more easily.

This has been taken forward and the group is now live at:

www.facebook.com/groups/hhds.leaders/?ref=br_rs

Membership will be limited to those with adult appointments within the district (moderated by Steve Harris and I).

I know this will be a very useful tool for many people but am also conscious that not everyone chooses to use Facebook. As such, we will continue to use email as our primary channel for all communication about events and opportunities to ensure the widest possible distribution.

Looking forward to seeing you join the group and benefiting from it.

Russ
